On this wonderful occasion of IPSR’s 50th anniversary, I wish to add my congratulations to those of so many others. Among the many at Mahidol who have contributed to reaching this milestone, I feel honored to have closely collaborated with two IPSR pillars: the late, long-serving Institute Director Boonlert Leoprapai and Professor Emeritus Aphichat Chamratrithirong. Over the years we worked together on many activities and studies. This led to lasting friendships.
In the 1970s, Dr. Boonlert helped me forge a partnership with the Bangkok Bureau of Public Health for family planning data collection and analysis. Based on this initial experience, he always graciously welcomed me to participate with IPSR. In the 1980s, for example, he facilitated conduct of a Columbia University operations research study on community development and family planning. In the late 1990s, he advised a Packard Foundation exploration to support reproductive health services among Burmese refugees.
Dr. Aphichat in turn helped me understand, appreciate, and study the cultural dimensions of Thai demographic behavior. This not only deepened my own research but also resulted in several co-authored publications. I remain hopeful that, even in our retirements, Aphichat and I may yet have one more opportunity to research intersections between Thai demographic history and culture.
I feel proud and privileged to have been associated with Mahidol and IPSR during its long history. I wish IPSR continuing success as it embarks on its next fifty years.
With best wishes and gratitude,
Don Lauro, PhD
